Tricia, Melissa, Jose-

RE:  Tricia’s InStyle Tip

What is a good brand of eyeliner for the inner rims of your top & bottom lashes, especially if you wear contacts?  Any special application techniques?

Celia,

Hey girl—I like Tarte liners—they just came out with a very skinny liner—not sure if they have a purple color, but I did receive a navy, brown and black which I love!!!  Just be careful when you line the inner rim (don’t poke yourself)!  I also like Sue Devitt’s liners.  I am not sure of any special techniques—I am just gentle with my clients who wear contacts and sometimes I let them line their eye if they are more comfortable.

Thanks Melissa!

I actually have a dark brown Tarte eyeliner pencil called Madame X (great name, huh?), but not the new EmphasEYES one.  I also have Sue Devitt eye intensifier pencils in Tanzania, Zaire & Gold Reef - are those the ones you’re talking about?

I do like the Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier pencils—I have the following shades: Olive, Black, Dark Brown, Plum and as far as the Tarte Pencils—they are called emphasEYES in the three colors I mentioned in the above post.

Sue’s are fat with a smudger on the end (like a crayon) and Tarte’s are super thin.  Love them so much—but, you know they will all be replaced as soon as TSB comes out with eye pencils!!!

Tricia has actually used the intensifiers on Brittany Murphy in the film Uptown Girls!

I LOVE the Sue Devitt line and think these pencils...as creamy chubby pencils go...are FABULOUS!!!! Have tried the Tarte too...also would recommend the MAC Kohls (love the color Rosemary and Thyme....I’ve actually rocked this one out....just rimmed my lower lashes with it and put on mascara...compliments GALORE!!!!) and the Clinique Quickliners.

Celia....I would say if you had contacts to beware of anything that could potentially pile up and dry...that is to say, some of the “long wearing” creme liners and pencils often have silicones and binders that make it dry and adhere to the skin....BUT if they pile up on each other there is the potential of minor flaking which can land in your contacts.  I don’t wear contacts but I’ve had mascara flake into my eye and let me tell you....I might as well as have been trying to put out a lit cigarette a la Viggo in Eastern Promises IN MY EYE! It HURT that badly....so just be careful of THAT! It’s really gonna hinge on how much you line...I try to just line with as few a strokes as possible to color actuation and then stop so the creme doesn’t pile up on top of itself.

You COULD potentially just wet a shadow and line the inner rim, but it tends to be a wet area and so will eventually emulsify and fade, but I’ve done that before and you won’t get the flaking issue.  Liquid could also work but work quick, don’t poke yourself in the eye and try not to blink before it dries (sounds complex, eh?).

As for the sensitivity issue, if it’s a big deal for you, definitely try to only use products with boxes that will say opthamologist tested or ok for sensitive eyes. I think Clinique and Bourjois...uh I’d have to examine more boxes.

I too will be waiting for the TSB pencils!

Jose,

Very good advice about contacts—I usually use pencils on my clients, but sometimes I have used a gel liner (like Bobbi Brown) and of course, the TSB cake liners.  Good thoughts and I will keep them in mind as well!!  Love how we all learn from each other on this site.

Thanks Jose & Melissa!

Luckily, my eyes are not very sensitive, but it’s always a pain (sometimes literally & sometimes physically-Jose, you’re right about the pain- if something gets under my contact, it’s hard to even open my eye to get the lens out!)

Anyway, I was more worried about it rubbing off and getting on the outside of my contacts & making things blurry.

What kind of brush do you use for gel liners or wet/dry liners on the inner lashes?

As always, thanks for y’alls great advice & help!  smile smile

Stars...how did I miss this?

Best brushes honestly for lining the inner rim are going to be the flat, squarish “push” eyeliner brushes....that way you can use the side of the brush and lay/pat the color onto the lash line and then squash it into the top lash line.  Also, Sephora has an AMAZ-O brush with a silver handle called the “smoky eyeliner” brush!

Why do I love this? I discovered it is PERFECT for not only swirling concealor around a pimple/zit/blemish but also for applying concealor excellently around the eye area and over discolorations due to its synthetic nature (pushes the cream around better) and its small conical shape which fits right in the pocket under the eye....use one side to apply and the clean side to blend...works PERFECT with Amazing Concealor and even the TSB foundations as a concealor.

AND....and, you say...you can also use it to line the inner rim of the eye as well....because it’s a bit fatter err on the side of caution and don’t place it too far close to the eye....just think of washing the base of the lashes until you get the right placement.

EYEBALL the brush and if it’s toooooo full, try a traditional liner brush...this one just takes a little more time...and by all means, use short strokes to place color rather than trying to line over long distances.

Thanks Jose for the brush advice, thus saving me from poking myself in the eye!!  I will proceed with caution.

You are a gem!

HEY! Hello from another San Diego Girl! I was born here and grew up at the beach (sunset cliffs). Anyway, I am a newbie and I am putting in another vote for Tarte skinny rim liners called Emphas-eyes!  I JUST got some new Tarte emphas-eyes and they don’t have purple (yet!) but I did get a nice rich Navy that is a new color for them (on Q, don’’t know if in store yet). It sells out quick!! So if you see it, GRAB IT! With the popularity of these skinny rim liners I don’t think it will be long before they develop more colors! I am hoping for a beautiful pale sky blue to really make your eye whites pop! And a deep green would be pretty too! OOOO! SO many colors, I hope they bring some new ones out soon!  I sometimes have watering and problems if I put things really close to my eye on the inner rim so I found if I pencil right in at the root of my lashes, it works just as well, it defines and I don’t get any watering and works if you do it lightly, with contacts. I hope this helps!

Welcome TS Beauty!  It is good to hear from another San Diego lady!  And thanks for your insight into the Tarte liners—I like them very much!  Got them as a gift and have used them a ton since.  What TSB products are you loving?

Hey Melissa & TS Beauty!

You’ve sold me on the Tarte EmphasEyes.  What color do y’all like best?  My eyes are hazel brown.
